Circulation Pump vs Freeze Protection vs Low Ambient Protection — What’s the Difference in HVAC/BMS
Circulation Pump
Ensures continuous water flow (hot or chilled) through the system even when HVAC units are OFF. Prevents stagnant water from freezing in pipes or coils.
Freeze Protection
Prevents coils or piping from freezing and bursting. Achieved through:
🔹 Low temperature sensors
🔹 Electric heaters
🔹 Running pumps during off-cycles
🔹 Shutting outdoor dampers to reduce cold air entry
Low Ambient Protection
Protects outdoor HVAC units and compressors when external temperatures drop below operational limits.
Includes:
🔸 Compressor lockout
🔸 Crankcase/oil sump heaters
🔸 Fan modulation
🔸 Delay starts during extreme cold
BMS Logic Matters:
Each of these plays a unique role and must be addressed properly in your control strategy to ensure reliability, efficiency, and system longevity.
Whether you’re designing a system, programming logic, or commissioning, understanding these protection modes is key.
